ARCH is shaping the future of healthcare

The ARCH team is the lead architect and clinical planner in the transformative expansion of Ipswich Hospital and Cairns Hospital. The two projects are included in the six hospital developments announced by the Queensland Government on 26 September. This is the largest-ever investment in hospitals in Queensland, adding 264 beds, advanced surgical theatres, and state-of-the-art emergency departments.

Our architectural vision drives modern, patient-focused healthcare environments designed to meet Queensland’s growing healthcare needs while ensuring efficiency, innovation, and superior care.

As the lead architect and clinic planner for the Ipswich and Cairns hospital expansion projects, we are thrilled to announce the endorsement of funding for the progress and expansion of these healthcare facilities. Premier Steven Miles and Health Minister Shannon Fentiman's recent joint statement highlights Queensland's commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure, and we are excited to be an integral part of this transformative initiative.

The Ipswich Hospital Stage 2 Expansion, with an investment of $1.066 billion, will play a vital role in increasing the hospital's capacity by adding 200 beds, six operating theatres, a new Emergency Department, satellite medical imaging service, and various other essential facilities. Our architectural designs and clinic planning have been meticulously framed to optimise patient flow, reduce wait times, and enhance healthcare delivery.

The ARCH team is lead architect and clinical planners for this largest project of the six announced. We are working as part of the BESIX Watpac team and we have engaged Architectus as a subconsultant to ARCH for the project.

Similarly, the Cairns Hospital Expansion (Tranche 1) marks a significant milestone in bolstering healthcare services in the region. With an additional 64 beds and refurbishment across multiple floors, this expansion project sets the stage for future growth and enhanced patient care, reflecting our commitment to comprehensive and forward-thinking healthcare design. ARCH is working as part of the Hansen Yuncken team and we have local Cairns partner firm CA as a subconsultant to ARCH.

Our team has worked diligently to ensure that the revised designs account for cost escalations, the complexity of delivering infrastructure expansions in live clinical environments, and the increased scope made possible by the 2024-25 State budget funding boost. We are dedicated to creating modern, efficient, patient-centric healthcare spaces that align with the government's vision of a robust and sustainable healthcare system.

As architects and clinic planners, we are committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of these vital healthcare infrastructure projects. We look forward to continuing our partnerships with Queensland Health, BESIX Watpac and  Hansen Yuncken to contribute to improving healthcare services across the state.
