The new mental health in-patient unit is a 24 bed extension to the existing Royal Darwin Hospital mental health service. The facility includes a non-acute ward and a SARA (short-stay) ward, with a direct connection to the existing emergency department. The new unit has been strategically placed to allow for the growth of the mental health service through close consultation with the hospital and our experienced clinical planners. The project strives to integrate the clinical requirements surrounding a health facility whilst balancing the need for culturally safe spaces for the largely indigenous patient demographic.

The project team have responded to this need by increasing the proportion of patient-accessible outdoor space (20%) of the ward areas. To maximise the impact of the courtyards, ARCH has integrated the natural elements of the landscape into the design fabric. Rainwater-activated features provide authentic outdoor spaces which respond to the uniquely Territorian environment.
