Margaret Tobin Mental Health Component

Mental health facility design promotes healing with home-like environment, expanded PICU, and family-centric spaces

The existing eight-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Margaret Tobin Centre faced capacity constraints and operational limitations. The dated, institutional environment lacked the layout and modern infrastructure needed to manage high-acuity consumers, compromising patient dignity and hindering therapeutic de-escalation. Furthermore, restricted lines of sight within the old facility compromised safety for both the multidisciplinary staff and vulnerable patients.

As lead consultant, architect, and clinical planner, ARCH designed a modern 12-bed facility structured into two six-bed pods. The home-like design features private ensuites, light-filled lounges, a consumer kitchen, and secure courtyards to maximise natural daylight. ARCH integrated a low-stimulus room and dedicated family spaces, alongside a secure sally port and a centralised staff station that optimises lines of sight and technology-enabled monitoring.

The expansion increases critical bed capacity, reducing pressure on acute health services. By replacing a restrictive environment with a daylight-driven, domestic design, the facility enhances patient dignity, reduces anxiety, and accelerates rehabilitation. Crucially, the optimised layout provides a highly secure, efficient workplace that protects staff while enabling exceptional, patient-centred care.
