Taronga Wildlife Hospital

Taronga Wildlife Hospital

Inspired by nature, harmonising architecture and sustainability, creating a sanctuary for healing wildlife while igniting passion for conservation in future generations

The Taronga Wildlife Hospital in Sydney is Australia’s first specialist wildlife veterinary teaching hospital, purposefully designed to meet the vital needs of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Its architecture harmonises with the natural landscape, featuring curved elevations and organic shapes that integrate seamlessly with the surrounding rock escarpment.

Rock strata conceptually drives the façade of the Taronga Wildlife Hospital, symbolising the geological layers found in nature with material selection enhancing the organic feel of the design. Blue glass bricks, representing water, have been used for the marine wildlife rescue department and are arranged in a hit-and-miss configuration, allowing for good airflow to the marine animals being rehabilitated and improving their welfare. The public guest forecourt features a striking canopy inspired by shade trees. This double-height structure, articulated through arched alcoves, frames views of the hospital's treatment areas, connecting the public with the vital work being performed inside.

The new hospital will double the teaching and training capacity while encouraging public engagement in wildlife care. This world-class facility will educate veterinarians and veterinary nurses on how to effectively care for injured wildlife, equipping them with the critical skills needed to save lives during disasters like the 2019 bushfires.

In line with the hospital's commitment to environmental integrity, the design is poised to achieve a 5-Star Green Star Rating. Sustainable methods and materials have been prioritised, guaranteeing the hospital stands as a model for future architectural projects in wildlife care and rehabilitation – inspiring future generations through education and conservation.
