Taronga Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Centre

Taronga sits overlooking Sydney Harbour and is a major civic, educational and cultural attraction. This centre is a combined research facility and visitor display that is home to forty different species including five threatened species that have been brought back from the brink of extinction by the Taronga team.

The RACC (Reptile and Amphibian Conservation Centre) focuses on improving Taronga Conservation Society Australia's commitment to conservation, science, education and elevating guest experiences.

The facility includes 1,800sqm of specialist spaces and the design integrates the building with its surroundings, much like the reptiles it houses, blending into nature's tapestry concealed with a green wall that is alive and responsive to the seasons.

Designed to harmonise with the natural and physical environment, the building's facades mirror its surroundings, and the building's position within the existing contours ensures a symbiotic relationship with nature.

Within its walls, state-of-the-art animal exhibits redefine excellence, prioritising animal welfare and conservation efforts. The intricately engineered building services maintain precise climatic conditions tailored to the needs of over 40 individual species, spanning diverse habitats from cold alpine regions to humid rainforests and arid deserts.

Visitors embark on a transformative journey through the landscape, guided by eight immersive and educational zones that offer first-hand encounters with various climates and habitats. Amidst this immersive experience, guests gain insights into the world of snakes, lizards, and frogs, fostering a deeper connection and understanding of these remarkable creatures.

Encouraged to embrace their role as climate heroes, visitors are inspired to take action towards securing a brighter future for all reptiles and amphibians. It offers exceptional guest experiences, leading animal welfare, and advanced conservation facilities that educate us on how to contribute to the solution for climate change.

In the past, the reptile house has always been a popular exhibit, and this new centre offers the most advanced reptile experiences to showcase modern-day dinosaurs.
