Gunnedah Hospital Redevelopment
Where light, culture and care come together to support healing and community.
ARCH were engaged by NSW Health Infrastructure to transform the Gunnedah Hospital campus into a contemporary healing environment for the community. Site challenges faced by the Local Health District included ageing infrastructure, a clinical environment disconnected from the local landscape and culture, challenging wayfinding and a lack of natural light.
By integrating a new single-storey acute services building, with the existing hospital buildings, the design streamlines care by co-locating the emergency department with a 23-bed inpatient and maternity unit. The solution prioritised intuitive navigation through a 24-hour emergency "beacon" entry, which successfully separates public and ambulance circulation for improved safety and flow.
To promote wellbeing, the architecture utilised double-height spaces and pitched roof forms to flood the interior with daylight. The design deeply embeds local artwork and culture throughout the new facility. The entry to the emergency department features backlit perforated panels with Kamilaroi motifs inspired by the local landscape and rivers. This redevelopment isn't just a clinical upgrade; it’s a welcoming, friendly space where light, culture, and care come together.
