Wangaratta Organics Processing Facility

EPA approved Australian first Organic Processing Facility demonstrating leadership in transitioning to a circular economy

ARCH was responsible for the design and documentation through construction and liability period for the Wangaratta Organics Processing Plant Facility. The facility processes food and garden waste from the LGA using state-of-the-art temperature controlled composting cell technology utilising an underground airing system from Canada and the U.S.A This innovative sustainable system of "Aerated Static Pile Composting" comprises seven bunkers with a capacity of 425 cubic metres per cell.

Following initial shredding, the organic waste spends three weeks in the temperature-controlled bunkers, where seeds and pathogens are killed. During this stage, air is pumped into the cell keeping the optimal temperature in order to speed up the composting process while this process reduces Volatile Organic Compound emissions while a  nearby leachate pond manages contaminated water.

The organic matter from the bunkers is then placed in windrows, which are turned and watered regularly for two months until the compost is ready for use as topsoil. As an EPA-approved Australian first, the Rural City of Wangaratta is demonstrating leadership in transitioning to a circular economy converting landfill into a commercially viable end product for use by the Council in parks and landscaping and purchase by the community.
